Using field observations and AI to support urban biodiversity around the school

Why Do Nest Boxes Matter?

In Catalonia, urban growth and the loss of mature trees are reducing the number of natural cavities available for many bird species.

One way to help them is to build nest boxes. However, not every location is good to place a nest box. In some areas nest boxes are not really needed, because there are already some natural cavities. Other areas don’t have the food or the resources needed to breed new babies.

We explored several areas around our school and recorded observations to identify the spots where nest boxes could have the maximum positive impact for local bird populations.

Our Community Action Goal

The Challenge

Many cavity-nesting birds around towns and schools depend on mature trees and natural cavities to breed. In some areas, these nesting opportunities are becoming more and more limited.

Our Action

Next autumn the new Global Scholars students in our school will build nest boxes to help these species, but before they do that, we need to find out where nest boxes could have the most impact.

We explored areas around our school and did field observations to identify the areas where nest boxes would be more valuable for our local birds.

After the fieldwork, we used AI to analyse the data we collected and help us identify the best spots to place nest boxes.
